A History Built on Readiness

Since 1997, Patriot Maritime has supported some of the nation’s most demanding U.S.-flag operations-building a reputation for safety, readiness, technical depth, and dependable execution across government and commercial fleets.

Patriot Maritime traces its roots to 1997, when American Ship Management and Patriot Contract Services were established as an independent U.S.-citizen ship management platform built by experienced industry leaders. From the beginning, the company was focused on disciplined vessel operations, regulatory compliance, and the ability to deliver for customers whose missions could not tolerate delay.

Over the years, Patriot has grown from its original U.S.-flag fleet responsibilities into a broader ship management organization supporting Ready Reserve Force vessels, Military Sealift Command programs, commercial tankers, training ship support, and specialized technical and regulatory services. That growth has been shaped by a consistent operating philosophy: put capable people around complex ships, maintain high standards, and stay ready for the moment the mission changes.

From independent beginnings to large-scale government ship management and commercial expansion, Patriot’s story is one of steady growth, operational depth, and long-term trust earned over time.

1997–1998

Independent beginnings

Patriot Maritime’s foundation was laid in 1997 with the formation of American Ship Management and Patriot Contract Services. Created by former APL executives, the business was designed to operate as an independent U.S.-citizen entity for U.S.-flag vessel management. In its first chapter, the company assumed responsibility for APL’s U.S.-flag Maritime Security Program fleet and took over MARAD Ready Reserve Force work previously managed under APL.

In 1998, Patriot expanded that early operating base by bringing additional containerships into the U.S. flag. Those first years established the company’s core identity: a practical, execution-focused ship manager able to take on regulated, mission-critical assets and run them to demanding standards.

1999–2005

Building government sealift depth

In 1999, Patriot won its first major Military Sealift Command work, managing Large, Medium-Speed Roll-on/Roll-off vessels that played an active role in transporting military equipment and sustaining strategic sealift capability. The company’s footprint in government ship management expanded quickly, and Patriot-developed crews and shoreside teams gained deep experience in activation, operations, maintenance, and mission support.

During this period, Patriot-supported vessels participated in military operations and exercises tied to U.S. readiness requirements, including work connected to Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. At the same time, the company built lasting relationships with maritime labor partners and strengthened the operating discipline that would define its later growth.

2005–2012

Rebuild, refocus, and technical capability

As industry contracts shifted in the mid-2000s, Patriot refocused on Ready Reserve Force management and rebuilt its fleet position around long-term government support. New RRF awards, special mission vessel work, and follow-on operating contracts helped the company deepen its bench in layberth operations, activations, drydock planning, and lifecycle maintenance.

This period also broadened Patriot’s technical and regulatory capabilities. Through Patriot Maritime Compliance, the organization expanded its support in safety management systems, quality systems, vessel response planning, port and facility security, and related compliance programs. By the early 2010s, Patriot had developed not just operating experience, but the institutional infrastructure required to manage vessels, crews, and compliance obligations as an integrated whole.

2013–2018

Scale and operational expansion

A defining milestone came in 2013, when Patriot was awarded the management of eight Watson-class LMSR vessels for Military Sealift Command. The contract dramatically expanded the company’s scale and required a rapid transition across ships operating overseas and in the United States. Patriot met that challenge by hiring, training, and deploying large numbers of qualified mariners in sequence while assuming responsibility for complex vessels already engaged in demanding readiness cycles.

The years that followed reinforced Patriot’s reputation for execution under pressure. The company continued to support prepositioning and surge sealift missions, manage special mission vessels, oversee drydock projects and major repairs, and add commercial work, including tanker management. Patriot’s operational reach during this period extended across the Pacific, the Indian Ocean, North Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and the Americas.

2019–2023

New ownership, new momentum

In 2019, Ryan Libhart Pereyda acquired the business and began the next phase of Patriot’s development with an emphasis on growth, diversification, and disciplined execution. That next chapter included commercial expansion as well as continued success in government ship management.

In 2021, Patriot acquired its first company-owned vessel, the Haina Patriot, reflagged the tanker into the U.S. fleet, and positioned it for government service. In 2022, the company celebrated its 25th anniversary. In 2023, Patriot added further momentum with new tanker activity, additional RO/RO work, and the opening of its Houston operations office—strengthening the company’s physical presence and capacity for future growth.

Today

Today, Patriot Maritime supports a portfolio that spans government and commercial operations, including Ready Reserve Force work, Military Sealift Command programs, and U.S.-flag tanker activity. The company’s operating model combines shoreside technical depth, union and mariner relationships, compliance discipline, and hands-on vessel management experience developed over decades of service.

Patriot’s history is not defined by a single contract or vessel class. It is defined by readiness—by showing up with the people, systems, and judgment required to manage complex ships safely, efficiently, and with accountability. That is the legacy Patriot has built since 1997, and it remains the standard the company brings to every assignment today.
